Biography
The Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble was one of the best known music groups in the country during the 1980s and 1990s. Working in an electronic pop style, the ensemble built a wide following, and its recordings were broadcast on radio and television and sung widely by the public. It often appeared alongside the Wangjaesan Light Music Band, and together the two groups shaped much of the popular music of that era with performances remembered as graceful, refined, and full of energy. The ensemble had its own composers and songwriters, who wrote and arranged much of its repertoire. Well known songs connected to the group include "Whistle," "Cuckoo," and "In Maidenhood," lyrical numbers about youth and everyday life that remained favourites long after they were first performed. The group also set published poems to music, turning verse by well regarded writers into songs that reached a broad audience, and vocalists who trained with the ensemble went on to become widely recognised performers.
