The Wangjaesan Light Music Band was one of the country's leading music groups, best known through the 1980s and 1990s. Playing in a light music and electronic pop style, it performed alongside the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, and together the two groups defined much of the popular music of that era with performances remembered as graceful, refined, and full of energy. It ranks among the country's established professional ensembles, mentioned in the same company as the Moranbong Band, the State Symphony Orchestra, the Unhasu Orchestra, and the Mansudae Art Troupe. Many of its vocalists trained under noted music educators before joining, and the band served as a proving ground for singers who went on to prominent careers.
